Act 3
Written by Amy

INT. BEDROOM–LATER

Jason packs his belongings into a large duffle bag. Bethany walks up behind him.

                        BETHANY
              So you’re going.

He halts and turns around.

                        JASON
              Yeah. I’m going.

Bethany leans against the wall and looks down at her feet.

                        BETHANY
              Think the information is
              true?

                        JASON
Even if it’s not I have to
              hope, right?

She looks up, her eyes red. She smiles.

                        BETHANY
              Nothing holding you back, right?

Walking towards her, Jason reaches out to her.

                        JASON
              Nah, every reason to stay.

                        BETHANY
              Me too.

                        JASON
                      (pausing)
              Then stay.

                        BETHANY
Can I ask you to take Ally?
                        JASON
              Sorry. It’s a packaged deal.
Either you come with, or that
              one stays here.

                        BETHANY
              You’re a bastard.

                        JASON
Hardly, she’s a pain in the
ass. Your friend is dying and
              she wants blood.

                        BETHANY
She just wants to be with our
              mom and sister.

                        JASON
              I know. I just don’t want to
              deal with her.

                        BETHANY
              You’re as bad as Duncan.

                        JASON
              Duncan’s a good man. Whatever
you decide you have to know
that. He’s done some dark things
              but it’s been my experience,
when he loves, he loves big.
If you leave with me, your friend
              will be in good hands.

                        BETHANY
              I don’t know. She’ll never forgive
              me.

                        JASON
              Somehow I doubt that.

                        BETHANY
She can’t stand my sister any
              more than anyone else.

                        JASON
              She’s not my best friend,
but I know her well enough
to know she wants you to
              be happy.

                        BETHANY
And you think you know what’ll
              make me happy.

                        JASON
              Your family.

                        BETHANY
              She is my family.

                        JASON
              And your mom and sisters?

                        BETHANY
Good or bad it’s not them
              I’m thinking about right
              now.

Jason steps closer.

                        JASON
And who is it you’re thinking
              about right now?

Gazing up into Jason’s face.

                        BETHANY
I think you know who I’m talking
              about.

He smiles a wicked smile.

                        JASON
              You better make sure you’re
not biting off more than you
              can chew.

                        BETHANY
What do I have to lose?

                        JASON
              With me, Angel? Everything.

He caresses her cheek and buries his face in her neck. They embrace.

INT. SHAYLA’S BEDROOM–NIGHT

Shayla lies curled up, spooning with Duncan.

                        SHAYLA
              Do you think she’ll leave?

                        DUNCAN
Do you want her to go?

                        SHAYLA
How can I hold her back?

                        DUNCAN
              Friends do things for each
other. You put up with her
              sister.

                        SHAYLA
              That’s hardly the same as
              waiting for someone to die
              when waiting could cost them
              everything else they want.

                        DUNCAN
You do a lot for her.

                        SHAYLA
              A friend does those things
              without being asked. A best
              friend does them without
              asking for anything in return.

                        DUNCAN
              You’re dying, not shooting
              for sainthood.

                        SHAYLA
                       (pause)
              Why are you doing this?

                        DUNCAN
              Doing what?

Facing him.

                        SHAYLA
              Romancing me.

Duncan props himself up on his elbow and gazes down at her.

                        DUNCAN
              Luv, I romance no one.

Shayla quickly turns away. He takes his finger and turns her chin back towards him.

                        DUNCAN
              How many times have you
              been romanced?

                        SHAYLA
              Enough to know when it’s
              happening.

                        DUNCAN
I stay here because I want
to stay here. I have family.
              I have connections. They’ve
              stopped begging me to come
              home.

                        SHAYLA
              You’re married?

He chuckles.

                        DUNCAN
              Me? Married? No. People I
              call family. People who
really have no need for me now.

                        SHAYLA
              My family’s gone. Bethany’s
all I’ve got left. Her and
              Ally.

                        DUNCAN
              Even Ally, heh?

He traces her cheek with the crook of his finger.

                        DUNCAN
              Once upon a time...

                        SHAYLA
              Once upon a time what?

                        DUNCAN
              You’re a good woman. You don’t
              need that fantasy of yours
              wrecked.

She lights up as she laughs.

                        SHAYLA
              I’m dying. Pity romance is
about as base as it gets.

Gazing up and down her body.

                        DUNCAN
              I don’t pity you.

                        SHAYLA
Then why are you lying here
              with me?

                        DUNCAN
Because in the five years since
              the war, you’re the first
              woman who’s...

                        SHAYLA
              Who’s what?

Handing her a handkerchief. Her nose is bleeding.

                        DUNCAN
              Who’s reminded me of what
              loyalty and friendship look
              like. And not just someone
              paying lip service to it.

Shayla swallows hard.
                        SHAYLA
              And love.

He smiles.

                        DUNCAN
To the end, luv. To the end.

Brushing the hair from her face he lowers his mouth to hers. They kiss. Deep and longing with every touch. When they part he kisses her forehead and rests his cheek next to hers.

EXT. TRAILER–MORNING

Duncan stands at the edge of the fire, smoking, staring down into the flames. Jason joins him.

                        JASON
              You gonna miss me?

Duncan smiles.

                        DUNCAN
              Nah. You?

                        JASON
              Me neither.

Facing Jason, he laughs.

                        DUNCAN
We’ve had a lot of interesting
              times.

                        JASON
You were the only one to
              stand by me man.

                        DUNCAN
              That’s what friends do, right?

                        JASON
              Sofia would approve.

                        DUNCAN
Sofia was a sweet kid. You
didn’t need to go through that
              alone.

                        JASON
              She loved you man.

                        DUNCAN
              She loved you too.

                        JASON
I was her brother. She had to
              love me.

                        DUNCAN
              Is this really necessary?

                        JASON
              You loved Sofia. But not
              like this one. I think
              this one you would’ve left
              the life for all together.

                        DUNCAN
              Sofia was a child. Nineteen.
She wanted me and she was dying.
My brother wanted her. And he
is, or was well, does it matter?
She was beautiful and sweet. He
              would’ve broken her.

                        JASON
              And Shayla?

                        DUNCAN
              She wants me.

                        JASON
What about you? Do you want
              her.

Facing Jason.

                        DUNCAN
              Like a fire needs oxygen.

                        JASON
              Then you’ll come with us?

                        DUNCAN
              I’m afraid I’m where I’ve
              come to live.

                        JASON
              So you’re making her choose
              between you and Bethany?

                        DUNCAN
You watched Sofia and Carl die.
It’s a long, slow, painful process.
It doesn’t make for easy travel.
I’m afraid it’s Bethany who has
              to choose.

Both men stare into the fire.

                        JASON
              Maybe we’re both wrong.

                        DUNCAN
I watched them last night. I’ve
              never seen a stronger bond.

                        JASON
              Women are like that.

                        DUNCAN
No, this is more like through
the fire I’ll be there stuff.

Turning his gaze to the trailer.

                        DUNCAN
              Nothing that we’ve done
holds a candle to what runs
              through those veins. If
              Shayla lets go, and Bethany
              chooses to leave with you...
I don’t know, as she strong
as she is, Shayla might break.

                        JASON
              And Bethany?

Looking back at Jason.

                        DUNCAN
How would I know? That one
              belongs to you.

Jason and Duncan stare back into the fire.

INT. LIVINGROOM–MORNING

Shayla and Bethany sit side by side on the couch. They nudge one another.

                        SHAYLA
              Think they’re talking about
              us?

                        BETHANY
              Maybe.

They giggle.

                        SHAYLA
You know it’s ok if you go.

                        BETHANY
              I know.

                        SHAYLA
              Then why aren’t you going?

                        BETHANY
              Who said I wasn’t?

                        SHAYLA
                       (softly)
              Are you?

                        BETHANY
              I should...

                        SHAYLA
              Yeah...I figured as much.
              (smiling) Hot guy, mom’s
              alive. What chance did I
              stand?

Bethany looks away.

                        BETHANY
              I’m not going.

                        SHAYLA
In the whole time we have
              known each other, have we
              ever lied to each other?

Bethany glances up towards the ceiling.

                        BETHANY
Hmmm. Did you leave the towels
on the floor? Are you okay?
              Are you mad?

They both laugh. Then nudge each other again.

                        SHAYLA
               About the important shit.

                        BETHANY
Well, when you put it so
              eloquently...

                        SHAYLA
              I’m sick. And there aren’t
              any hospitals. And there
              aren’t any doctors. There’s
no cure, and travel just makes
              it worse. We’ve been through
               everything and then some.

                        BETHANY
              Yeah.

                        SHAYLA
Find your mom and Erin. And
              if you’re adventurous enough
              come back.

Bethany shakes her head tears fall free.
                        BETHANY
              They’d never stand for it.

                        SHAYLA
And what would they think of
              a sick tag-a-long?

                        BETHANY
              They wouldn’t stand for that
              either.

They look at one another.

                        SHAYLA
              Don’t worry, I’m in good
              hands. Go.

                       BETHANY
              You’ve always been the strong
              one. It's my turn.

                       SHAYLA
              What about Jason?

                       BETHANY
              What about him?

                       SHAYLA
Bethany, you love the guy. He's
              going to leave.

                       BETHANY
              Shayla, I'm staying. That's the
              end of it.

Shayla nudges her and frowns.

                       SHAYLA
              And Ally?

                       BETHANY
Jason's promised to take her home.

                       SHAYLA
              How did you manage that?

                       BETHANY
Three hours of amazing sex. The sex
didn't hurt, but when I told him I
was staying I made him promise to
protect her. And then ... after-

Shayla puts an arm around Bethany’s shoulders and allows her to lean against her. Both of them wipe away a few stray tears.

EXT. TRAILER–DAY

The remaining six stand outside the front of the trailer. Ally and Rose hug. While the men and Shayla and Bethany say their final goodbyes.

                        ROSE
              You, you neanderthal, you
take care of my friends. And
you, Bethany, you make sure he
              does it.

                        SHAYLA
Any words of wisdom for me?

                        ROSE
              Just remember you’re not dead.
              (grinning) Not yet anyway.

They embrace hard and long.

Looking on Jason clears his throat.

                        SHAYLA
I’m never going to see her
again. I think you can wait
              another minute or two.

Bethany walks up to Ally and wipes a tear away.

                        BETHANY
I've done my best to mother you.

                        ALLY
It's not too late. You can still
come with us. You love Jason.

                        BETHANY
I love all of your and I'll see you
again. But for now I have to stay
              here.

                        ALLY
              I understand, Bethany, but don't
              think I'll forgive you.

                        BETHANY
              Ally, to the end, huh?

They hug. But Ally heads up the hill to be with Rose without looking back.

Jason at Ally and Rose then walks over to Bethany. Taking her head in his hands he tilts it up towards his gaze.

                        JASON
Stay close to the camp and Duncan.
              He'll protect you.

                        BETHANY
              I will.

                        JASON
I never expected it to hurt this
much. (pause) I will be back
              for you.

                        BETHANY
             Don’t make promises.

Pressing his forehead to hers, then kissing her passionately.

                        JASON
             We’ve started this thing. I
have to see how it turns out
             don’t I?

She smiles.

                       BETHANY
I’ll love until the end and
             beyond.

He gazes deep and long into her eyes before kissing her lightly on the lips and burying his face at her neck. He steps back.

Hitching his pack on his back Jason gives one last glance over his shoulder.

                        JASON
              Duncan.

                        DUNCAN
              Jason.

Ally loops her arm through Rose’s and they follow Jason up the road. Jason looks back at Bethany until she can look no longer.

Once he turns away for good Shayla places a hand on Bethany’s shoulder and whispers in her ear.

                        SHAYLA
              It’s cold out here. Let’s
              get you inside.

Bethany wipes her face dry and stands until she can bear it no longer and goes inside.

EXT. TRAILER–DAY
Duncan sits on the deck shuffling cards repeatedly. He produces a cigarette and lights up. The door opens and he looks up.

                        DUNCAN
You look like you could use
              one of these.

He holds one out and Shayla takes it. She places it to her lips and Duncan lights it for her. Taking a long drag she smiles and laughs.

                        SHAYLA
I heard these things can kill
              you.

Duncan grins.

                        DUNCAN
              Sit. Watch the fire.

                        SHAYLA
Will it make me feel better?

                        DUNCAN
              I don’t know. I used to do
              it all the time.

                        SHAYLA
Used to? You and Jason are
              always out here.

He stares at the fire.
                        SHAYLA
              I’m sorry. Open foot...

He gazes back at her.

                        DUNCAN
              Please don’t apologize.

                        SHAYLA
              Why not?

                        DUNCAN
              Because life’s to important
              to waste on apologies. At
              least ones like that.

                        SHAYLA
Well I am sorry. I’ve been
             shutting you out today.

                        DUNCAN
              Bethany definitely lost more
             than I did.

                        SHAYLA
              I don’t know about that.

                        DUNCAN
Let me put your mind at ease.
              I’m an asshole, nothing hurts
              me.

                        SHAYLA
              I don’t believe you.

                        DUNCAN
              Smoke your cigarette.

                        SHAYLA
              I bet you miss him.

                        DUNCAN
              And if I did?

                        SHAYLA
I miss him too. He made Bethany
              happy. That makes me happy.
But I don’t get to see them
ever again. I even miss that.
              The little bitch made things
              interesting.

                        DUNCAN
It has been quiet. But forgive
me if I say I hardly miss the
little twit. She was nasty to
you from the moment you arrived.

                        SHAYLA
She had just lost her father, and
believed her mom and other sister
              were dead.

                        DUNCAN
Tough times make for tough decisions.
You either make the bold move or
              you fold, it’s that simple.

                        SHAYLA
When I got here all I had was
              Bethany. Ally was almost a
              blessing. Even though she was
              jealous it was something, you
              know?

                        DUNCAN
              You’re family is dead?

                        SHAYLA
              Bethany is alive.

                        DUNCAN
              So essentially, when you came
upon us you had no one but that
              one person.

                        SHAYLA
              Yeah.

                   DUNCAN
What I’m saying is that you
          haven’t folded.

                   SHAYLA
Well, I have you and Bethany, right?

                   DUNCAN
          That’s not why you haven’t
          folded.

                   SHAYLA
          Then why haven’t I folded?

                   DUNCAN
          Because you’re strong. I suspect
          people have underestimated you
you’re whole life. They look at
you and see a quiet, gentle, girl.

                   SHAYLA
          And what do you see?

                   DUNCAN
          I see a woman who deserves a
break. A woman who even I thought
would be done in by losing the
one thing that meant anything to
her. But here you are, proving
          me wrong.

                   SHAYLA
You know, Bethany is always the
one for romance novels. I always
teased her for it. But when it
came to movies I was just as bad.
I wanted the bad boy turned good man.
Or the criminal with a heart of gold.
Of course, when the truth was, and
still is I’ve got none of that.

                   DUNCAN
          And what am I?

                  SHAYLA
A good man trying to make a
          dying woman’s wish come true.
And while I can live that, I
can’t live with the idea that
Jason may be doing the same
          thing to Bethany.

                   DUNCAN
Jason is not the pitying kind.

                   SHAYLA
          Are you?

                   DUNCAN
In the past I’ve made sacrifices.
But the friend was worth it and
          the woman was beautiful.

                   SHAYLA
          And me?

Looking to Shayla with pain and longing.

                   DUNCAN
You have no idea what you do
          to me.

Shayla stands up and puts her cigarette out. She opens her mouth as if to speak and stops. She reaches for the door, Duncan takes her by the hand and stamps out his own smoke.

                   DUNCAN
Trust me, what I feel isn’t pity.

                   SHAYLA
          Then what is it?

He clasps her hand between his.

                   DUNCAN
Let me take you on a date.

                   SHAYLA
          A date?

He smiles.
                   DUNCAN
          Yeah. A date.

She smiles, tears come to her eyes.

                   SHAYLA
I dress up, you dress up kind
          of thing?

                   DUNCAN
The I convince you I love you
          for real kind of thing.

He kisses the top of her hand and caresses it.
CUT TO:

INT. BEDROOM–NIGHT

Bethany is fixing Shayla’s hair and make-up. Shayla sits still and quiet. Bethany chatters away.

                   ROSE
          You look beautiful. He's not
          gonna know what hit him.

Shayla looks at her sadly.

                   SHAYLA
          I can't do this.

                   BETHANY
          You can’t do what?

                   SHAYLA
          Pretend that this man loves
          me.

                   BETHANY
Trust me, when you see what he’s
          done, you’ll know he’s not
          pretending. Besides that man
          pretends for no one.

                   SHAYLA
C’mon, Bethany. Look at me. I’m
          fat. I’m loud. I’m ugly. I’m
dying. Name one good thing about
me. One thing a man like Duncan
          would find appealing?

                   BETHANY
First of all, you are not ugly.
Second of all, you are not loud.
And most of all, you’ve got to
embrace who you are, what you are,
and own it. So what if you’re
carrying a few extra pounds. I’ve
seen the way Duncan has been gazing
at you when you’re not looking. And
it has not been the look of a man
          pretending.

Shayla shrugs.

                   SHAYLA
It wouldn’t be the first time
          someone’s lied to me.

                   BETHANY
Duncan never lies. And like Jason
if he didn't love you he wouldn't
be with you. Now stop being a bitch
          and enjoy this.

Shayla forces a smile to her face.

                   SHAYLA
I think I’ve got it from here.

                   BETHANY
You know, Shayla, you really are
          lovely.

                   SHAYLA
Thanks. But all I really want
          to be is pretty.

Rose kisses her on top of her head and leaves Shayla looking at a mirror, pursing her lips.

INT. KITCHEN–NIGHT

Duncan lights the candles and carefully sets the table. It’s chili dogs and french fries and soft drinks. He looks to Rose.

                   DUNCAN
Are you sure this is going to
          work?

Bethany turns on the CD player and accoustic guitar begins to play.

                   BETHANY
          Every woman likes a little
          romance. I don’t care what
they say. It may not complete
them, but it sure does feel
          good.

                   DUNCAN
          And the whiskey?

                   BETHANY
I think Shayla needs a little
help. I think you know that.

                   DUNCAN
                 (grinning)
          And me.

                   BETHANY
          You know what to do.

                   DUNCAN
          I guess I do.

                   SHAYLA
          You guess you do what?

Duncan turns around. There stands Shayla.

Bethany walks away. Duncan holds out his hand and motions for Shayla to come to him. She walks towards him and kisses him on the cheek. She smiles.

                   SHAYLA
          The only thing missing is
          the baseball game.

Pressing his mouth to her ear.

                   DUNCAN
I think we can arrange a night
          game.

She laughs.

                   SHAYLA
          Sit down. I’m hungry.

His eyes twinkle.

                   DUNCAN
Eat up. I worked hard on
          this.

                   SHAYLA
                  (softening)
          Yeah, I guess you did.

                   DUNCAN
Sit. I have something for you
          after dinner.

                   SHAYLA
          A gift?

                   DUNCAN
          Yeah, kind of a Christmas
          thing.

                   SHAYLA
          Christmas was two months ago.

                   DUNCAN
It’s never too late for Christmas.

                   SHAYLA
          I guess not.

                   DUNCAN
          Now eat up. While everything’s
          still hot.

                   SHAYLA
          Okay, okay. Then the gift?

                   DUNCAN
          Then the gift.

They dig into the chili dogs and french fries.

INT. LIVINGROOM–LATER

Relaxed and thoroughly drunk on the couch, Duncan pours an equally drunk Shayla another shot of homemade whiskey. She slams it down and sucks the air in through her teeth.

                   SHAYLA
          You make this stuff yourself?

                   DUNCAN
          Actually, I’ve been saving it
          for a special occasion. But
it was Jason who brewed up this
batch. And it’s not too bad
          if I say so myself.

                   SHAYLA
I’ve never been one for hard
          liquor. My experience has been
nothing good can come from it.

                   DUNCAN
You seem to be enjoying it tonight.

                   SHAYLA
It’s the company, not the alcohol.

                   DUNCAN
          You ever been in love?

                   SHAYLA
I’ve had my fair share of
          heartbreak. What about you?

                   DUNCAN
          Plenty of girlfriends.

                   SHAYLA
All of them pretty I’m sure.

                   DUNCAN
No. Not all of them. Before
the war I lived a very ugly
life. The women may have been
          beautiful, but they were
not the kind of women you
fall in love with. But you,
I noticed you from the moment
          you got here.

                    SHAYLA
          Now that’s the whiskey talking.

                   DUNCAN
          No. That’s the truth.

                   SHAYLA
Try this truth on for size.
          That date in there?

                   DUNCAN
You mean the one we’re still on in
          here?
                   SHAYLA
          Sure. Whatever. Ever since
I got here, I’ve been thinking
          I’m gonna die single. My
          relationships sucked when there
were men to be had. You know they
say you only get one great love,
and I think mine is Bethany.
          Not in any romantic sense.

                   DUNCAN
And what about me? Would you
          have left me behind?

                   SHAYLA
          God, you’re such a girl.

Duncan laughs.

                   SHAYLA
          What?

                   DUNCAN
I said the same thing to Jason
          the other day.

                   SHAYLA
          Alcohol is dangerous.

Duncan sits the shot glasses and whiskey down. He lays Shayla down in his lap. He brushes her hair from her face.

                   DUNCAN
          I would’ve come with you.

                   SHAYLA
          Yeah, right. That’s what they
          all say.

                   DUNCAN
          What are you talking about?

                   SHAYLA
I’ve had two long term relationships.
And in the end, they couldn’t
          handle me or my problems.

                   DUNCAN
          What sort of problems are
          you talking about?

                   SHAYLA
Give me another drink and I’ll
          tell you.

                   DUNCAN
          I think you’ve had enough.

                   SHAYLA
          That’s usually why I don’t
          drink. I don’t make a good
          drunk.

                   DUNCAN
          In case you haven’t noticed,
          neither am I.

                   SHAYLA
          But you’re sexy when you
          brood.

                   DUNCAN
          What are these problems?

                   SHAYLA
          They’ll make you wish you
          never knew me.

                   DUNCAN
          You’re dying. I love you.
If I were going to bolt, it
          would’ve been when I watched
          your nose bleed the first
          time.

She smiles.

                   SHAYLA
          How romantic.

                   DUNCAN
I’ve killed men for a paycheck.
When the war came and the chaos
with it, men like me? We were
in high demand. But I had a
          friend who lived outside
that life. And I had a brother
so deep in it he wanted a
          wife, and he wanted that
          friend’s sister.

Sitting up.

                   SHAYLA
          Jason. That ring you wear
          around your neck. It’s for
          her, isn’t it?

                   DUNCAN
          I need another drink.

                   SHAYLA
          You loved her.

                   DUNCAN
          She was nineteen. Innocent.
And had no idea how much
danger she was ever really in.

                   SHAYLA
          What was her name?

                   DUNCAN
Sofia. And yes, I loved her.
But not the way she wanted
          to be loved.

                   SHAYLA
          She was beautiful I’m
          sure.

                   DUNCAN
Yes, I slept with her, and when
she was dying she made me take
the ring I had given her back.
And promise to give it to
the one person who could make
me happy the way I made her
          happy.
                   SHAYLA
That’s going to be one lucky
          woman.

Taking the necklace off he removes the ring, and sets the necklace aside. He takes her hand.

                   SHAYLA
          You’re drunk.

                   DUNCAN
I love you. There’s this place down
by the lake. It’s beautiful there.
          Even during the winter.

                   SHAYLA
          Please don’t do this...

                   DUNCAN
          I never married Sofia.

                   SHAYLA
          I don’t care about that.

                   DUNCAN
Then what do you care about?

Shayla touches his face.

                   SHAYLA
I want to be pretty in your
          eyes. As beautiful as Sofia.
I want you to ache for me like
I’ve ached for you. I love
you too, Duncan, and I don’t
          want it to end.

Duncan draws her into his arms and kisses her softly, and sensuously.

                   DUNCAN
          Beautiful, love, most beautiful.

Their clinch deepens as their passion builds until Duncan leans her against the couch and the picture fades to black.

EXT. LAKESIDE–DAY

Duncan is dressed in black. Bethany stands across from him. Shayla lies on a large float in a wedding gown. The camera pans the the horizon then cuts back to Duncan kneeling down to kiss her forehead and place the ring on her finger.

                   DUNCAN
                (whispering)
          Beautiful, love, most beautiful.

Music begins to play. Duncan kisses her forehead one last time then gets to his feet. He and Bethany walk away.

A MAN comes down out of the forest and helps Shayla to her feet. It’s Carl. Together they walk into the forest as the music continues and credits roll.
