Muse: Michael, can you tell us about yourself. What part of the world do you live in?
Scott: I live in the UK, London.
Muse: Who are your favorite authors?
Scott: A good question!
Muse: Why do you write?
Scott: I began writing because I do not like to read. Sounds strange but I realised the volume of people in the world that will not read the available literature. I thought I'd try to write something that I (and similar non-reading types) may like to read.
Muse: Have you written other books?
Scott: I'm about half-way through my second and third novels; Indulgence and Fibonacci’s Child. This is How I Walk; In My Black Shoes, needs to decide if it’s a novel or an anthology before it gets finished – its 90% done.
Muse: What is your writing regiment? How often do you work on a novel? Do you set daily time or word goals? What keeps you meeting your deadlines?
Muse: I don't really do the ‘being organised thing’
Muse: What are the creative jumping off points for you? Are you inspired by dreams? Music? Nature? What triggers your imagination?
Scott: Beer? - I don’t know. Just think of some stuff and write it down, I guess.
Muse: Absolution is a contemporary cross genre piece of fiction. How would you describe it?
Scott: Like I said, I just think of stuff and write it down. The question is best answered by the reader, not me.
Muse: What was your inspiration for Absolution?
Scott: MS-Word and a blank page is probably not the answer you’re looking for. I guess I thought of a bunch of characters from different cultures and figured out some stuff for them to do together. Learning to write by writing seemed like more fun than a creative writing class.
Muse: Which of your characters do you most identify with?
Scott: None really, I suppose it’s being like somebody who does impressions. I do some characters better than others.
Muse: What is your favorite scene in Absolution and why?
Scott: I don’t have a particular scene. (spoiler alert) The opening scene (nuclear destruction) is identical to the final scene with the exception of one subtle change. It is also identical to the opening scene in Indulgence.
Muse: How do you feel about the current publishing marketplace?
Scott: Don't get me started! |
